Entries closing soon for Collie’s big art competition

Are you a painter, a potter, woodworker or some other kind of arty artisan? Everyone has a chance to win in FESTIV ARTY’s huge art show. But you need to get a move on because entries close on Friday, August 11.

This is the 27th year Collie has celebrated the extraordinary range of artistic talent we have in and around the town, and organisers are expecting that this is likely to be the biggest yet.

“Last year we had over 400 pieces displayed at the Collie Art Gallery during the Griffin Festival,” says Fran Dorozenko who is coordinating the competition together with Merrilyn Piavanini.

“It was literally packed to the rafters.  And the display at PCYC was the best it’s ever been, so we’re very excited about this competition.  It’s going to be bigger and brighter than ever because everyone involved has had a good year’s experience since then.  Our ‘woodies’ as we affectionately call our local woodworkers, are flat out creating beautiful pieces for this competition.”

There is a huge range of categories you can enter. They include painting, mixed media, scrapbooking, photography, woodwork, ceramics, sculpture, mosaics and textiles, with special categories for youth arts, crafts, emerging artists and ‘out of town’ artists.

The record number of entries in last year’s Griffin Festival Art Competition were displayed in all their glory at the Collie Art Gallery as well as the Collie PCYC.

Works will again be on show at the Collie Art Gallery and the Collie PCYC with winners announced at the opening night on September 8 and on display to the general public from September 9.

Excitement is also building for the Festiv Arty Performing Arts Competition. The first heats will be in the dance section, to be held on August 12 at the Collie Mine Workers’ Institute. Instrumentalists and vocalists will compete on August 19 at the Performing Arts Centre at Collie Senior High School. Winners and runners up will perform along with guest artists at the Festiv Arty Gala Concert on September 15.

Festiv Arty has evolved from the very popular Griffin Festival of the Arts, which ran for 27 years. This new-look funky festival is coming together thanks to a dedicated band of tireless volunteers and the generous support of sponsors including Bendigo Bank, Griffin Coal and the South West Development Commission.
